Vintage map duvet cover

Creating a vintage map duvet cover can be a charming and unique project to add character to your bedroom decor. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make one:

### Materials Needed:

1. **Vintage Maps**: Acquire or download high-resolution images of vintage maps. You can find these in old books, online archives, or purchase digital downloads from websites specializing in vintage maps.

2. **Fabric for Duvet Cover**: Choose a fabric for your duvet cover. Cotton or a cotton blend is recommended for comfort and ease of sewing.

3. **Sewing Machine and Thread**: For sewing the duvet cover.

4. **Measuring Tape, Ruler, and Scissors**: For measuring and cutting fabric.

5. **Pins or Clips**: To hold fabric layers together during sewing.

6. **Iron and Ironing Board**: For pressing seams and ensuring neat edges.

7. **Velcro or Buttons (optional)**: For closure at the bottom of the duvet cover.

### Instructions:

1. **Measure and Cut Fabric**:
   - Measure your duvet insert to determine the size of fabric you’ll need. Typically, for a standard duvet cover, you’ll need two pieces of fabric that are each slightly larger than the dimensions of your duvet insert (to account for seam allowances).

2. **Prepare the Vintage Maps**:
   - Print or transfer the vintage map images onto your fabric. You can do this by printing directly onto fabric using a printer designed for fabric printing or by transferring the images using transfer paper and an iron.

3. **Arrange and Sew the Maps**:
   - Lay out your fabric pieces and arrange the vintage map prints in a pattern or layout that you like. Pin or clip the maps onto one of the fabric pieces.

4. **Sew the Maps onto the Fabric**:
   - Sew the vintage maps onto the fabric using a sewing machine or by hand, ensuring that they are securely attached.

5. **Assemble the Duvet Cover**:
   - Place the two fabric pieces with the maps facing inward (right sides together). Pin or clip the edges together.

6. **Sew the Edges**:
   - Sew around three sides of the duvet cover, leaving one of the shorter sides open. Use a straight stitch and reinforce the corners with a backstitch.

7. **Create Closure**:
   - If you’re using Velcro or buttons, sew these onto the open end of the duvet cover to create a closure.

8. **Turn Right-Side Out**:
   - Turn the duvet cover right-side out through the open end.

9. **Press Seams**:
   - Use an iron to press the seams and ensure crisp edges.

10. **Insert Duvet**:
    - Insert your duvet into the cover through the open end and close the closure.

11. **Final Touches**:
    - Smooth out any wrinkles and adjust the duvet within the cover.

### Tips:
- Wash and iron your fabric before starting to remove any wrinkles and ensure accurate measurements.
- Choose a vintage map theme that resonates with you or matches your bedroom decor.
- Take your time with sewing to ensure neat and straight stitches, especially when attaching the vintage maps.

By following these steps, you can create a personalized vintage map duvet cover that adds a nostalgic touch to your bedroom. It’s a project that allows you to showcase your creativity while enjoying the process of crafting something unique for your home.

Something that's making me happy: this New York City map duvet cover I just put on our bed. It's all vintagey and likes being in our old house, and the design satisfies my love of graphic prints. The price satisfied my wallet, too: it was $35. I googled for an H&M coupon and then ordered the pillow sham / cover set here.

I was also tempted by an orange and white number at CB2 and had fleeting thoughts of this floral explosion at Urban Outfitters. Fleeting because Alex instantly vetoed it, and I reluctantly admitted I'm not really a flowery girl. I'd get sick of it in two seconds. This botanical print seriously grabbed me, though.

But the Manhattan map reminds me of a sweet trip I took to NYC with Alex last year. It was so perfect, it could never be duplicated if we tried. We stumbled on a filming of Project Runway in Times Square, saw Tina Fey on an escalator, ate chocolate croissants in Central Park, and discovered a jazz age social on Governor's Island— where we bumped into Bill Cunningham two days after watching this great documentary about him. We couldn't believe our luck. So our bedspread will always bring up happy memories.
